Monday and Wednesday 1:
Course Requirements Required Course Materials: Basic Laboratory Methods for Biotechnology. Bound laboratory notebook with graph paper 6. Students will select a research project from one of 3 research streams: After researching what has been reported on their area of interest in the scientific literature, students will develop a research strategy and design experiments described in a research proposal.
Upon completion of training in the techniques required for their research project, students will perform their research and analyze the results. Results and conclusions of their research project will be communicated through presentations and a formal research paper. Grades for this course will be based on the following criteria: There will be a midterm exam and a comprehensive final exam given in the classroom.
Each exam is worth points, and will cover topics and concepts found in the in lecture, in assigned readings, and in homework assignments.
These exams may consist of a series of written questions and thought problems based on the labs performed and the lab reports completed. The format of all these exams will be diverse, and may include short essay, thought problem, graphing, matching, and multiple choice questions.
Each exam will have a practical component in which students will perform techniques at a series of work stations to demonstrate mastery of techniques used during the semester.
Research Proposal 50 points. Upon choosing a research question from the three research streams Bioprospecting with Microalgae, Natural Products from Herbs and Spices, and Biofuels Production from Microalgae Cultivationstudents will research the scientific literature to learn what is known about their experimental question.
After developing testable hypotheses, students will propose an experimental approach for researching their question. Research Presentation 50 points.
Upon completion of their experimental research, students will develop a presentation that discusses their results and conclusions. Research Paper 50 points. Students will write a formal report suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal which will include: Skills Portfolio points.
To prepare for assessments, students will be given homework assignments that include textbook readings and online tutorials, as well as outside readings from the scientific literature, worksheets, and bioinformatics exercises.
The Biotechnology Work Performance Evaluation will be included in this assessment. Students must share information in a complete, timely, and clear fashion to classmates and teammates.
If common work areas are not cleaned up and organized after any class period, NO ONE in the class will be given that courtesy point for that lab exercise.
It is the responsibility of the last student to leave the lab to check on the common work areas before they leave.Business Research Methods - Syllabus Goals: • • • • Understand the field of business research Learn the scientific method as it applies to research Acquire organized and empirical problem solving-skills Apply lessons and business research methods to practical situations.
